2008 Campaign for State House 66

Candidate Responses

I received the follow response: "I'm a software engineer and previously investigated doing UTOPIA type system for our community, Woodland Hills. It would have been wireless (distance issues), and would have used excess bandwidth from Spanish Forks system. John Bowcut was extremely helpful.

My reason for doing this at the time was that QWest was NOT providing DSL, and we have no cable service. We were left with a handful of wireless providers whose quality of service was lacking.

We abandon the effort after stumbling into some legislative restrictions, and an unwillingness on our City Council to spend a dime. Later I gathered petition signatures and appealed to QWest. They finally brought in DSL and life has been "good", not great. I wish there were more competition.

While I agree with your concerns over the lack of competition, I also fear government running "utilities" as they tend to do it even worse than your standard monopoly does.

I'm open to ideas on achieving a healthy free-market Internet Provider economy. I'm also concerned for rural communities (and residents) lacking decent Internet access."
